The Benefits of an Active Life
The benefits of regular exercise are extensive. According to a recent publication by NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, July 2012), participating in regular physical activity can help reduce the risks of developing cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes and obesity in adults. Further benefits include maintaining musculoskeletal health as well as mental health and well-being. In children, being active can protect from disease and weight gain and promotes optimal bone mass and mental well-being. In older adults, the health benefits are even more pronounced due to conditions such as osteoporosis and circulatory diseases which tend to affect people later in life. Activities that promote strength, co-ordination, flexibility and balance are particularly valuable in helping people maintain the ability to perform daily tasks, such as gardening, shopping or playing with the children.
